“Disarmament and reintegration in the DRC: A big step towards peace and stability”

In recent news in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Recovery and Stabilization Program (PDDRC-S) is gaining momentum. Jean-Bosco Bahala, national coordinator of this initiative, stressed during a press conference in Kinshasa that the objective is to support at least 50,000 ex-combatants.

The disarmament and social reintegration process is progressing, with approximately 13,000 to 14,000 former members of armed groups already integrated into the program. At the same time, community reintegration is underway for nearly 5,000 people about to benefit from professional training and support for sustainable economic reintegration.

Fewer than 100 armed groups are recorded in the east of the country, constituting the main targets of the PDDRC-S. This program is part of a regional context of armed conflicts, with the objective of encouraging groups to voluntarily abandon weapons, by offering alternatives to violence.

This disarmament and reintegration dynamic is essential to promote peace and stability in the DRC, particularly by working in collaboration with other regional and international initiatives. Efforts to disarm and reintegrate former combatants are an important step toward rebuilding a more peaceful and prosperous society.
