President Tshisekedi wants to put an end to crooked and poorly trained officers and thus protect the territories of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) against the hegemonic ambitions of neighboring Rwanda. This is the message he conveyed during an exchange with the Congolese diaspora in China, where he is to sign new contracts and agreements with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The Congolese president announced that the violence provoked by Rwanda will not go unpunished, regretting the infrahuman conditions imposed on more than a million Congolese since the resurgence of the M23 in the east of the country. However, the international community, especially the United States, will never allow the DRC to trigger a military conflict with Rwanda. Therefore, to protect the populations, President Tshisekedi will have to rely on the training of the Congolese armed forces, with competent officers who are loyal to the country, rather than on a hypothetical intervention by foreign friends.
At the same time, the situation remains tense in the DRC where the opposition is repressed by the security forces and political tensions persist. The malaise in the Kasai and the shenanigans that are hampering the region’s development are also signs of a country plagued by many difficulties. However, the Congolese opposition is waking up and engaging a media dynamic to federate the various voices, although this must imperatively be accompanied by a structured program. Finally, in another register, the BIAC affair is closed after the abandonment of the proceedings against Michel Losembe, but the bank remains in crisis.
All of these events show a DRC plagued by difficulties of all kinds. To meet these challenges, President Tshisekedi must act with a long-term vision to reform the army and protect the people, while undertaking economic reforms to improve the daily lives of Congolese.
