The DRC has recently been confronted with a wave of demonstrations repressed by the police, arousing strong reactions from the Congolese population, but also from international chancelleries, the European Union and the United Nations.
The Deputy Prime Minister of Interior, Security and Customary Affairs, Peter Kazadi, held a press conference to discuss these events. During this conference, he acknowledged the disproportionate use of force by law enforcement, while stressing that the DRC was not the only country in the world to experience such incidents.
He also deplored the tendency to systematically accuse the Congolese state, even though other countries are experiencing similar situations without being so singled out.
In response to criticism leveled at the government, President Félix Tshisekedi hailed the professionalism of the Congolese police, prompting further reactions from the population.
Faced with this situation, it is clear that the Congo must find solutions to guarantee a proportionate use of force while ensuring the security of its citizens and respect for democratic freedoms.
