The imperative to promote the teaching profession in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The complex question of the social and economic value of teachers in the Democratic Republic of Congo poses a major challenge to the country’s authorities. National Education Day, celebrated on April 30, is an opportunity to reflect on the working conditions and remuneration of education professionals.

Teachers are unanimously recognized as the pillars of society, those who shape minds and build the future. However, the reality of their daily life is far from reflecting this importance. Congolese teachers feel neglected, underpaid and devalued compared to other professions.

The testimonies collected highlight the shocking gap between the salaries of teachers and those of certain senior civil servants. Some national MPs earn exorbitant incomes, while teachers struggle to make ends meet with salaries well below the threshold of decency. These glaring disparities fuel a deep feeling of injustice among Congolese teachers.

The lack of consideration for the teaching profession is forcefully denounced by the speakers. The “tramping of teachers”, a strong term used by some, highlights the precariousness in which many teachers find themselves. The meager salary increases announced by the authorities seem largely insufficient to meet the essential needs of teachers and their families.

The current situation raises concerns about the future of education in the DRC. Education professionals express fears about a possible shortage of teachers if working conditions and remuneration do not improve significantly. The challenge is to recognize the inestimable value of teachers and to translate this recognition into concrete actions.

It is imperative that the Congolese authorities take concrete measures to promote the teaching profession, both financially and socially. Investing in education is investing in the future of the country. Teachers deserve treatment worthy of their crucial role in society and it is time to give them the consideration and support they deserve.

On this national teaching day, it is essential to recall the fundamental importance of this profession and to call for concrete actions to improve the living and working conditions of teachers in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The future of education and, by extension, of the Congolese nation depends on it.
