“Saving the Virunga Park: the call to action against the plundering of natural resources in the Democratic Republic of Congo”

In the depths of the Democratic Republic of Congo, there is a natural and cultural treasure of inestimable importance: the Virunga Park. Created in 1925, it is Africa’s oldest national park and is home to unique biodiversity, including iconic species like mountain gorillas, lions and eastern chimpanzees. Unfortunately, these natural treasures are threatened by the destructive activities of the M23 rebels in Rutshuru territory, North Kivu province.

In a letter addressed to the President of the Republic, 14 environmental organizations denounced the actions of the M23 in the Virunga Park. They accuse these rebels of plundering resources, poaching, trafficking in wood and charcoal, as well as trafficking in baby primates. These illegal activities take place mainly in the Center and South sectors of the park, where the Congolese state authority and the eco-guards have difficulty in maintaining their presence. Conservation activities have been suspended for more than a year, leaving the field open to looters.

These environmental organizations also express their frustration with the inaction of the regional force of the East African Community (EAC), deployed in the region to support the Congolese government in its efforts to restore peace and the authority of the ‘State. They therefore call for a joint investigation involving the EAC, MONUSCO (United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in DR Congo) and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) in order to repress these environmental crimes and crimes of war.

The Virunga Park is a one-of-a-kind treasure, home to fragile ecosystems and endangered species. Its protection is essential to preserve the region’s biodiversity and ensure sustainable economic opportunities for local communities. It is therefore imperative that urgent measures be taken to save Virunga Park and put an end to the destructive activities of looters.

The Congolese Head of State is called upon to include the protection of Virunga Park in his diplomatic actions. It is time to put in place effective strategies to combat the plunder of natural resources and ensure the restoration of State authority in the region. The preservation of the Virunga Park is essential for the preservation of our natural heritage and to guarantee a better future for future generations.

It is time to act and say no to the plundering of our country’s natural resources. Virunga Park deserves to be preserved and protected for future generations. It is up to us to become aware of the importance of this heritage and to mobilize to safeguard it
