Erosion threatens the RN1: an alarming situation which risks isolating several provinces in the DRC
The state of National Road 1, a major axis connecting several provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a source of great concern. Indeed, significant erosion has already started part of the roadway after the Konzi bridge, located a few kilometers from the Makiala village in the Kwango province. This deterioration, described as dangerous by the local authorities, significantly damaged the right portion of the roadway, thus forcing all vehicles to use the left lane in order to be able to travel in complete safety.
According to Symphorien Kwengo, vice-president of the Kwango civil society consultation framework, this erosion has already swallowed up more than three meters of the roadway. It warns of the imminent risk of total collapse if adequate measures are not taken quickly. Indeed, the slightest rain could compromise the remaining part of the road, thus endangering traffic and isolating several provinces, including Kwango, Kwilu, Kasaï, and even the provincial city of Kinshasa.
Beyond the immediate issues on the mobility of people and goods, the economic consequences of an interruption of road traffic on the RN1 would be considerable. Trade between the provinces of Kongo Central, Kinshasa, Kwango, Kwilu and Kasaï could be seriously affected, leading to significant financial losses for economic players in the region.
It is imperative that the competent authorities take emergency measures to secure the RN1 and prevent any risk of collapse. The preservation of this essential communication route for exchanges between the different regions of the country must be an absolute priority. It is crucial to invest in road rehabilitation and strengthening works in order to guarantee its sustainability and ensure the safety of users.
In conclusion, the erosion threatening the RN1 constitutes a real challenge for the connectivity and economic development of several provinces of the DRC. Rapid and coordinated action is essential to avoid a catastrophe and preserve the integrity of this important road infrastructure.
