Calm has returned to Nkwenda, a village in the Bukoma groupement, located thirteen kilometers east of Kiwanja, in Rutshuru territory. However, this tranquility follows a clash that occurred on Sunday July 23, 2023 between the M23 rebels and a group of Rwandan Hutu fighters from the FDLR.
According to information provided by the civil society of the Bukoma group, two children were injured by stray bullets during this exchange of fire. The fighting lasted for several hours, from 1 p.m. until late in the evening.
The president of the civil society of Bukoma testifies: “There are two children who were injured, hit by stray bullets during these fights reported between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The fights started in the Nkwenda valley before progressing to the village”.
According to our sources, some residents who had taken refuge in Kiseguro, about four kilometers northeast of Nkwenda, and in Kinyandonyi to the south, have started to return home since this morning. Traffic has also resumed on the Kiwanja-Ishasha road axis.
The situation in Nkwenda is therefore temporarily stabilized, but these clashes once again underline the persistent tensions in the region. It is essential that the authorities take measures to ensure the safety of local populations and prevent further clashes between armed groups.
