Strengthening road safety on the RN1: an imperative to prevent future tragedies

A tragic incident occurred on Thursday evening on the RN1 national road at Mount Bangu, in the Songololo territory, resulting in the loss of seven lives. The accident involved a collision between a heavy goods vehicle from Kinshasa and a car carrying passengers and goods from Lufu. The collision took place as the car was waiting to pass a barrier installed by the Chinese company CREC7, responsible for rehabilitating the road section where the accident occurred.

According to survivors, the collision was sudden and inevitable, causing seven passengers to lose their lives instantly. This tragic event is a grim reminder of the frequent accidents on the RN1 road, with an average of five incidents daily leading to significant human and material losses, as reported by provincial transport authorities.

In light of this tragedy, there’s a pressing need to enhance road safety measures, improve signage, maintain roads, and raise awareness among road users about responsible driving practices. It is crucial for relevant authorities to implement effective measures to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.

During this period of mourning, our deepest sympathies go out to the families of the victims who are facing unimaginable grief. In honor of those who have passed away, let us join forces to ensure that every journey on our roads is characterized by safety and peace.
