The Association of Teachers of the University System (ASUU) at Sokoto University has recently raised urgent concerns about various challenges facing the institution. They have appealed to the government to address outstanding compensations for workers, reinstate the dormant board of directors, and settle academic allowances accumulated over the past five academic sessions.
The absence of a functioning board of directors has disrupted university governance, impacting crucial decisions affecting staff and students. ASUU also advocates for salary increases in line with government recommendations, including a 35% raise for Professors and 25% for other staff starting January 2023. Additionally, they urge the government to implement this alongside the N35,000 bonus following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
One major concern highlighted by ASUU is the long-standing incomplete housing project for university staff, posing security risks on campus. The deserted housing units, now inhabited by reptiles, need to be urgently completed to enhance campus security and address accommodation issues faced by staff.
The ASUU-SSU appeal emphasizes the importance of effective governance to ensure the smooth operation of Sokoto University and prioritize the well-being of its staff for an optimal learning environment. The association hopes that these demands will be met promptly to address the legitimate needs of university staff.
