Humanitarian crisis in Fizi: the tragedy of the displaced people of Lulenge

Fatshimetrie sheds light on the unfolding crisis in South Kivu, particularly in the Fizi region, through Fatshimetrie. In the remote villages of Lulenge, the situation is dire, with nearly 4,500 households displaced due to clashes between armed Rwandan Hutu factions of the CNRD (ex-FDLR).

A press release from Zawadi Kabandilwa Abambe, the head of the Lulenge sector, highlights the escalating humanitarian crisis. Tensions between Generals Hamada and Théophile have led to widespread panic and violence, forcing residents to flee to villages like Igomba, Lusilu, and Kilembwe-centre.

The living conditions of internally displaced people are alarming, with reports of health issues and disrupted education for children. Zawadi Kabandilwa Abambe is considering mediating between the armed factions to facilitate the return of displaced individuals to their villages. However, the challenge lies in ensuring effective mediation in a context of ongoing conflicts and regional instability.

The New Congolese Civil Society of Kilembwe, represented by Assani Musa Picaso, calls for urgent intervention from the Congolese government and humanitarian organizations to avert a looming catastrophe. The displacement of Rwandan refugees is seen as an emergency that must be addressed promptly to prevent a potential crisis.

Beyond statistics and reports, the true face of human suffering is evident in the remote villages of Fizi. Individual tragedies merge into a larger narrative of forced displacement, violence, and shattered futures. The crisis in Lulenge raises profound questions about dignity, fundamental rights, and the collective responsibility to act in the face of adversity.
