Strengthening student safety: the commitment of the Nigerian government

Title: Strengthening student safety: a strong commitment from the Nigerian government

Amid concerns about student safety in schools, the Nigeria government’s Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, has reiterated the government’s firm stance against harassment or bullying in educational institutions. The minister emphasized the paramount importance of creating a secure and supportive environment for all students during a meeting in Abuja, the federal capital.

Leading a school delegation at the meeting, Mr. Abraham Ogunkanmbi, the Head of School, showcased the education authorities’ dedication to implementing tangible actions to ensure students’ safety and well-being.

In response to a circulated video that raised significant concerns, the minister established a seven-member special committee to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incidents depicted in the videos. This committee’s mandate includes probing the events at the Lead British International School and exploring broader issues to combat social vices effectively.

Dr. Sununu underscored the necessity for closer collaboration between school officials and students to enable swift responses to similar incidents in the future. He emphasized the pivotal role of communication in resolving such matters, highlighting the importance of fostering trust and mutual respect between the administration and students within educational institutions.

The permanent secretary, Ms. Didi Walson-Jack, addressed the presence of an anonymous suggestion box at the school where students could discreetly report their grievances. This initiative, if implemented efficiently, could facilitate transparent dialogue between students and school authorities, fostering an environment conducive to conflict resolution and the prevention of unwanted incidents.

Mr. Ogunkanmbi, as the school’s head, confirmed that investigations into the unfortunate incident had been launched, demonstrating the school’s commitment to shedding light on the situation and taking necessary steps to ensure the safety and welfare of its students.

The meeting in Abuja underscored the Nigerian government’s resolute commitment to safeguarding students’ rights and ensuring their safety. It reiterated the strategic importance of addressing behaviors detrimental to the education sector, fostering trust in educational authorities, and promoting a secure, inclusive, and respectful school environment for all.

The government’s actions aim to establish effective mechanisms for preventing and responding to any form of violence or harassment in schools, bolstering confidence in the education system among parents, students, and society at large.
