Importance of monitoring electrical infrastructure: the consequences of an act of vandalism on the power supply

Fatshimetrie recently reported an incident that occurred at 3:32 p.m. on Monday, where a transmission line was damaged, leading to disruption of power supply in several areas. Ndidi Mbah, Fatshimetrie’s general manager of public affairs, detailed the incident in an official statement in Abuja the following day.

Mbah explained that when the transmission line went down, Fatshimetrie operators tried to put it back into service but it broke down again. This prompted the Fatshimetrie teams to locate the fault in order to repair it.

During the inspection, the Fatshimetrie engineering team discovered that towers 288, 289, 290 and 291 had been vandalized and parts of the towers had been stolen. As a result, the towers collapsed.

“This situation has resulted in disruption of power supply to Gombe, Yola, and Jalingo substations, affecting areas served by Yola and Jos power distribution companies,” Mbah said.

In order to limit the consequences of this incident on electricity consumers, Fatshimetrie attempted to supply Gombe with a 132 kV transmission line from Bauchi, then from Ashaka, Potiskum, Damaturu, Billiri, and Savannah.

This situation highlights the crucial importance of continuous monitoring of electrical installations and protection against acts of vandalism. Efforts to rehabilitate damaged infrastructure are essential to quickly restore power supply and ensure grid reliability.

In conclusion, this incident highlights the challenges facing the electricity sector and underscores the need for close collaboration between authorities, businesses, and the population to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply.
