Improving electricity supply in Nigeria: Target 6000 megawatts by 2024

The Nigerian Ministry of Energy is currently engaged in efforts to enhance the country’s electricity supply, aiming to achieve a capacity of 6,000 megawatts through the utilization of hydro and solar power plants. The Minister of Energy announced this ambitious target during a meeting with members of the Senate Committee on Energy in Abuja.

Despite the existing infrastructure, electricity production in Nigeria is presently at 5,800 megawatts, a level deemed inadequate by the Minister. To bridge this gap, there is a strong emphasis on investing in the rehabilitation of turbines and infrastructure to hit the 6,000 megawatt mark by the end of 2024.

As part of the improvement agenda, the federal government is planning to revamp the Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos), which play a pivotal role in the electricity supply chain. The performance of DisCos is seen as a crucial indicator of the energy sector’s overall efficiency. To enhance efficiency, there are discussions about restructuring and redistributing DisCos along state boundaries for better management tailored to specific regions.

Furthermore, there are considerations to franchise DisCos to attract private investments and establish more agile operational structures. The Minister believes it is time for the federal and state governments to take a more active role in managing the energy sector following challenges observed in the privatization process.

The recent visit by the Senate Committee underscores the ongoing interest in addressing power sector challenges, such as inadequate electricity supply and frequent national grid outages. A regulatory hearing is scheduled to address issues like rate adjustments and the financial burden on citizens.

In conclusion, while improving Nigeria’s power sector poses significant challenges, concrete steps are being taken to rectify existing deficiencies. Ensuring a stable, reliable, and affordable electricity supply to all Nigerians is paramount, and it necessitates effective measures and ongoing commitment from all stakeholders.
