Creation of an innovative fund for environmental protection in the Congo Basin

“Fatshimetrie, a platform dedicated to sharing impactful news in environmental sustainability, recently highlighted a significant gathering of over forty environmental advocates. The main focus of this meeting was the establishment of a unified financial mechanism. This mechanism aims to pool international funds to support local communities and indigenous Pygmy peoples in the Congo Basin.

Nicaise Kingunya, the focal point for the Convention on Biological Biodiversity (CBD), emphasized the importance of creating this fund by 2025. He believes that this initiative will streamline resources for tangible projects benefitting local communities and indigenous groups, leading to the preservation of forested areas.

Direct funding through this mechanism marks a crucial advancement in fulfilling international commitments under the Convention on Biological Biodiversity, especially in meeting the targets set by the global biodiversity framework of Montreal, Canada.

In an exclusive interview, Taty DILENGENDJU Mapuku further delved into Nicaise Kinguya’s insights, shedding light on the objectives of this innovative fund. The formation of this unique financial structure opens up new avenues for environmental preservation and community support. It signifies a beacon of hope for a sustainable future in the Congo Basin.

This initiative underscores the significance of global cooperation in environmental conservation and community empowerment. The journey towards sustainable development necessitates concrete actions like establishing funds to directly aid indigenous populations in safeguarding the fragile ecosystems of the Congo Basin. Through this collective dedication, a harmonious coexistence of nature and humanity for future generations becomes attainable.”
