During the recent visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Jean-Pierre Bemba, and Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), Lieutenant-General Jacques Chaligonza, to Bunia in the province of Ituri, a series of assessments and interactions were conducted to understand the security situation in the region.
The strategic mission focused on planned exchanges between high authorities and the military governor of Ituri, as well as various population representatives, including armed groups in Bunia. These direct dialogues aim to find concrete solutions to restore peace and ensure the security of the province’s population.
Deputy Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba’s role is crucial in conveying security directives from the Head of State to establish a lasting security climate in a region plagued by conflicts and violence. Recent tragic events, notably the killings by CODECO militia against innocent civilians in Ituri, have emphasized the urgency to address these abuses and protect vulnerable populations.
The presence of high-ranking officials like the Deputy Prime Minister and Chief of General Staff on the ground is vital in seeking practical measures to prevent further tragedies and establish enduring peace and security in this part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
An inclusive and participatory approach involving all local, political, military, and civil actors is necessary to achieve a peaceful resolution of conflicts and restore true peace in Ituri province.
