In the heart of Tshopo province, an ecological revolution is underway in Kisangani, driven by local micro-enterprises promoting improved stoves. These ecological braziers offer a sustainable alternative to traditional stoves and are poised to revolutionize household cooking practices. Supported by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and funded by the European Union, these micro-enterprises have received recognition for the efficiency and durability of their improved stoves through rigorous testing by the Center for Studies and Research on Renewable Energies Kitsisa-Khonde.
These improved stoves outperform traditional metal braziers, providing safer cooking environments with better heat direction towards the pot, resulting in faster cooking times while preserving the environment. By reducing the need for excessive woodcutting to make charcoal for traditional braziers, these ecological fireplaces actively contribute to forest resource conservation. With a lifespan of at least 2 years compared to 6 months for traditional braziers, they offer a long-lasting and responsible solution for Congolese households.
Michel Syakoma, CIFOR Wood-Energy technical assistant, emphasizes the significance of transitioning to improved stoves for user safety and environmental sustainability. Encouraging households to embrace these new cooking practices not only enhances safety but also aids in the fight against deforestation and biodiversity conservation.
Micro-enterprises like Jiko Butembo, ORBAGEN, AFBC-KIS, and Boyoma play a crucial role in promoting and manufacturing these improved stoves, advocating for sustainable and eco-friendly approaches. With the support of CIFOR, improved cookstoves have the potential to become the standard in Congolese homes, offering families a safer and environmentally conscious cooking experience.
Ultimately, improved stoves represent a significant advancement for Kisangani households and Congolese society at large. Embracing these sustainable practices paves the way for a more environmentally conscious future while enhancing daily lives and well-being. With these local initiatives, we are laying the groundwork for a better future for all.
