The Future of Higher Education: Integrating AI at the Heart of University Transformation

Professor Tshilidzi Marwala’s address at TUT’s 20th Anniversary Conference emphasized the critical need to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into education, research, and innovation. As the Rector of the United Nations University, Marwala underscored AI’s central role in shaping the future of work and entrepreneurship in higher education. His speech, titled “Universities and AI: Friends or Foes?”, prompted profound contemplation on the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.

Hailing from Duthuni village, Marwala highlighted that AI can bring both benefits and disruptions, advocating for the establishment of policies, standards, and laws to regulate its utilization. He asserted that those who disregard AI will face disadvantages, while those who embrace it will thrive. TUT, recognized as an AI Hub in 2023 by the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, is fully dedicated to this evolution by incorporating AI-focused initiatives across various sectors such as automotive, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, transportation, health, and telecommunications.

Through collaborations with industry partners, TUT is producing forward-thinking graduates equipped to tackle challenges and committed to sustainable practices and eradicating gender-based violence. The appointment of Dr. Gloria Serobe as TUT’s fourth Chancellor marks a significant milestone for the institution. Serobe, hailing from Gugulethu, embodies values of self-reliance, perseverance, and diligence instilled in her by her grandmother and mother, who managed small family enterprises in Centane. As the university’s ambassador, Serobe will confer degrees to deserving graduates, epitomizing the values of education and entrepreneurship cherished by TUT.

TUT’s bright future is anchored in its dedication to AI, innovation, and inclusive education, positioning itself as a key player in digital and societal transformation in South Africa. By commemorating its 20-year journey, the university asserts its place in preparing students to become the leaders of tomorrow.
