The growing threat of stowaways in Nigeria’s territorial waters

In the waters of Nigeria, the escalating issue of stowaways is causing mounting concern for the Nigerian Navy. The Director of Naval Information, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, has highlighted that the increasing incidents of stowaways pose a significant threat to maritime security in the region.

Stowaways, as defined by the Convention on the Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL), are individuals who clandestinely board a ship or hide in cargo without the consent of the ship’s owners or captain. This illegal and perilous practice jeopardizes the safety of both ships and their crews.

To address this growing threat, the Nigerian Navy has taken proactive steps by deploying Maritime Advanced Domain Surveillance (MDA) equipment to swiftly detect stowaways and effectively intervene. Recent successes include apprehending multiple stowaways in Nigerian waters, underscoring the Navy’s dedication to combatting this menace.

In recent months, numerous stowaway cases have been reported, such as the apprehension of five individuals on the MSC Martha in the Lagos Channel, eight on the Charminar Panama, and eleven on the Guangzhou Highway Panama, all in the Lagos region. Additionally, authorities intercepted eight stowaways aboard the NATAL, and twenty others on the ships TEME, Grande Guinea, and MT UOG Constantine.

It is crucial to emphasize the risks faced by stowaways when attempting this illicit mode of travel. Apart from the severe legal repercussions, stowaways endure health hazards like adverse weather conditions, scarcity of food and water, potential injuries, and even fatalities.

In conclusion, combating stowaways is a top priority for the Nigerian Navy, which is diligently working to safeguard the country’s territorial waters. Public awareness of the perils of this unlawful practice is essential, along with implementing preventive measures to deter individuals from embarking on such hazardous endeavors.
