The ADF rebels continue to unleash terror in the Ituri region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a recent attack on the Ndimo village resulting in the deaths of eight civilians and injuries to several others. This tragic event follows closely on the heels of another incident where four individuals, including a FARDC soldier, were killed in the same area. The local population, already reeling from previous attacks, was once again shocked by intense gunfire from the ADF rebels.
The situation has taken a turn for the worse, with a total of sixteen victims in just three days in the Walese Vonkutu chiefdom. In Zunguluka, within the Bundingili groupement, another faction of ADF terrorists killed four individuals, including three children, and took fifteen civilians hostage to help transport stolen goods after setting fire to around a dozen houses.
The escalating violence has raised concerns among local human rights defenders, who are alarmed by the surge in ADF attacks despite the presence of security forces. Although the joint FARDC-UPDF forces are conducting operation “Ushuja” along the Komanda-Luna axis, the rebels persist in their assaults, posing a grave threat to civilian lives.
Given the gravity of these incidents, there is an urgent need for cohesive and effective measures to safeguard the civilian population. Authorities must bolster security protocols in the region to quell this mindless violence and ensure the safety of residents.
