In the ongoing saga between the commission and the former governor, Yahaya Bello, there has been a dramatic game of cat and mouse.
Despite attempts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to apprehend Bello at his Abuja residence, they faced obstacles in bringing him to justice.
It is reported that Bello sought refuge in the Kogi State Government House, taking advantage of the immunity granted to the current governor, Ahmed Ododo, under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution.
The EFCC aims to prosecute Bello for alleged financial misconduct during his time in office. However, a scheduled court appearance was delayed as Bello failed to show up.
During the court session, the EFCC Adviser, Mr. Kemi Pinheiro, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to holding Bello accountable, even mentioning the possibility of military intervention to apprehend him.
Pinheiro stated, “We may need to enlist the army’s help to extract Yahaya Bello from his hideout. Immunity does not shield him where he is hiding.”
This situation underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability, regardless of one’s position. It highlights the necessity of all individuals, including political leaders, facing consequences for their actions in a democratic society.
