“Liberation in Mali: Return to freedom for the kidnapped Italian nationals”

Kidnapping of three Italian nationals released in Mali in February 2024

In news that came as a relief to Italy, three Italian nationals belonging to the same family were released after being kidnapped in Mali in May 2022. Rocco Langone, his wife Maria Donata Caivano and their son Giovanni Langone finally found freedom after a long period of detention. Despite the difficult conditions of their captivity, the Italian government announced that they were in good health and would be repatriated to Rome in the coming days.

The kidnapping of the Langone family, who had resided in Mali for several years and belonged to the Jehovah’s Witnesses religious movement, was carried out by members of the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (Jnim), an affiliated jihadist alliance to al-Qaeda. The efforts of the Italian secret services, in collaboration with tribal figures and local intelligence, ultimately resulted in their release. This happy outcome demonstrates the importance of effective international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and kidnappings.

This release is also a reminder of the persistent security challenges in Mali, which has been facing a rise in jihadism and violence for several years. Kidnappings of foreigners or Malian nationals unfortunately remain frequent, reminding us of the need to strengthen security and stability in the region.

This positive news highlights the importance of international support and solidarity towards victims of kidnappings and conflicts. Let us hope that the Langone family will be able to return to a normal life after this ordeal and that the authorities will continue to work for peace and security in Mali.
