“Electricity Demand Challenges in Lagos: How EKEDC and its Customers Work Together to Ensure a Stable Power Supply”

The changing demand for electricity is a hot topic at the moment, as evidenced by the recent EKEDC customer consultation forum led by Managing Director, Dr. Tinuade Sanda. This meeting with customers from various areas of Lagos highlighted the challenges facing the power company.

The main problem facing EKEDC is the decline in electricity supply due to lack of power supply by distribution companies. This shortage is accentuated by the reduction in the amount of energy available to the EKEDC, going from 513 megawatts to only 350 megawatts. Factors such as low water levels during the dry season for hydroelectric plants also impact energy availability.

With a view to improving service, the company is committed to providing electricity in a safe, sustainable and reliable manner, using cutting-edge technologies. Despite the challenges, EKEDC maintains an average collection rate of 84%, indicating a positive trend in revenue generation.

Customers were urged to pay their bills in a timely manner to ensure the financial stability of the company and support investments in infrastructure and service improvements. Additionally, customer collaboration is key to reducing instances of energy theft and vandalism, which has a significant financial impact on the business.

Chairman of the Festac/Satellite Town Customer Advisory Forum, Dr. Akinrolabu Olukayode, has stressed the importance of increased production capacity in the energy sector to meet growing demand. It encourages the participation of investors and experts to improve the country’s energy capacity and ensure stable electricity supply.

In sum, collaboration between EKEDC and its customers, as well as support from government and investors, are essential to overcome the current challenges in the electricity sector and ensure reliable energy supply for all.
