In a context of persistent tension in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, expressed his serious concerns. Calling for rapid de-escalation, he called on regional leaders to prioritize dialogue to resolve political differences peacefully.
The integrity, security and stability of States in the region must be guaranteed, and the solution cannot be found by military means. The African Union Commission also called for non-interference by foreign powers in the internal affairs of African countries.
Calls for a peaceful resolution of the security situation are increasing, with dialogue initiatives between the DRC and Rwanda. The Angolan President, João Lourenço, stressed the importance of relaunching the peace process to avoid a deterioration of the situation and its disastrous consequences.
Despite accusations of supporting the M23 rebel group, the DRC remains open to dialogue with Rwanda, under certain conditions. Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, President of the DRC, stressed that dialogue was possible, but not at any price.
In this tense context, the search for a peaceful solution and the promotion of dialogue remain priorities to prevent an escalation of violence and protect civilian populations in the African Great Lakes region.
