In Irumu territory, Democratic Republic of Congo, the media world has lost one of its most promising voices. Kambale Kitsa Fidèle, program director at community radio Umoja, was tragically shot dead by a soldier of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) on the night of February 21, 2024. This terrible incident took place as Kambale was returning home after a long day of work in Komanda.
The soldier, visibly intoxicated and accompanied by his wife, opened fire on Kambale, killing him instantly. Despite the indignation of the local population, the authorities quickly reacted by launching a search to apprehend the soldier responsible for this unjust murder. At just 27 years old, Kambale leaves behind a broken family and a grieving community.
Unfortunately, this incident is not isolated in Ituri. In 2021, Joel Mumbere Musavuli, director of another community radio station, was attacked along with his wife, leaving Joel fatally injured. These tragic events raise questions about the safety of journalists and media professionals in the DRC, and highlight the importance of protecting press freedom and the right to information.
In these dark times, it is crucial to remember the courage and commitment of journalists like Kambale Kitsa Fidèle, who risk their lives every day to inform and educate their communities. Their sacrifice must not be forgotten, but rather honored by continuing to defend press freedom and fighting against impunity for violence against the media.
Rest in peace, Kambale Kitsa Fidèle, your voice will echo in our hearts forever.
