“Impending reshuffle in the DRC: What political future for the country?”

The political landscape of the Democratic Republic of Congo has been shaken by a series of resignations within the government led by Prime Minister Sama Lukonde. Indeed, the latter submitted his resignation to President Félix Tshisekedi, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.

This resignation is part of the obligation for members of the government elected deputies to choose between their ministerial function and their elective mandate. They were given 8 days to make this choice, a deadline which expires this Tuesday, February 20.

Several members of the government have already chosen to sit in the National Assembly, among them personalities such as Vital Kamerhe, Jean-Pierre Lihau, and Antipas Mbusa. These cascading resignations suggest an imminent reshuffle within the Congolese government.

Sama Lukonde, appointed Prime Minister in February 2021, thus paved the way for a transition to a new political era. His departure leaves room for speculation about his successor, with rumors pointing to the potential appointment of Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo as Prime Minister by the President of the Republic.

This period of political transition is crucial for the future of the DRC, and future developments will be closely scrutinized by the population and the international community. We still have to wait for the next announcements to know who will lead the government and what directions will be taken for the country.
