Bubonic plague, a fearsome disease, is resurfacing in the Rety health zone, located about 100 kilometers north of Bunia, in the territory of Djugu, in Ituri. Since last week, around fifty cases have been reported, including unfortunately 5 deaths.
The first cases were detected on February 8, alerting the community to the seriousness of the situation. Around ten students from Kpandroma primary school were affected, showing alarming symptoms during lessons. Local authorities are calling for urgent treatment to stem the spread of the disease.
Dramatic events occurred, including the case of thirteen students who fainted during class at Kpandroma primary school, all showing symptoms of the plague. They were immediately transferred to hospital to receive adequate care. Unfortunately, the disease continues to spread, with 5 new cases recorded this Tuesday morning.
With a total of 52 people affected, including 5 deaths and around twenty under treatment, health authorities are warning against a resurgence of this disease. Notables in the region are urging a door-to-door vaccination campaign to contain the situation.
At the same time, it is essential to strengthen hygiene measures to control the proliferation of rats, the main vectors of this endemic disease in the region. Increased public awareness is necessary to avoid a more serious spread of this bubonic plague in Rety.
