“France announces a firm position on the situation in North Kivu in the DRC: persistent tensions between the M23, Rwanda and the Congolese armed forces”

In the unstable eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), France expresses serious concern about the security and humanitarian situation prevailing in Goma and Saké, in North Kivu. The French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs recently condemned the offensives of the M23 rebel group, alleging support provided by Rwanda. This declaration marks a hardening of the French position in the face of this ongoing conflict.

France now demands that the M23 immediately cease hostilities and withdraw from the areas it occupies, in accordance with the decisions taken within the framework of the Luanda process. In addition, she calls on Rwanda to cease all support for the M23 and withdraw from Congolese territory, while asking the armed forces of the DRC to end all collaboration with the FDLR, a group from the militias responsible for the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994.

This firm position by France aims to encourage a peaceful resolution of the conflict and to support regional mediation efforts already underway. However, on the ground, the situation remains tense with new clashes between the FARDC and M23 fighters supported by Rwandan forces, in Ndumba, a village located between Sake and Minova.

In this complex and volatile context, it is crucial for the international community to remain vigilant and continue to support peace and dialogue initiatives with a view to a lasting resolution of this devastating conflict for civilian populations.
