Members of the Union of Cultural Associations for the Development of Ituri recently made a statement affirming their wish to see the state of siege in Ituri end. This request aims to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) to organize the elections of governors and vice-governors in the region. According to them, lifting the state of siege would facilitate the smooth running of the electoral process in the province, in accordance with the recommendations of local notables.
It is clear that the population of Ituri feels frustrated with the current situation. The CENI’s decision not to organize gubernatorial elections in certain provinces, such as Ituri and North Kivu, raises questions and concerns. The members of UNADI believe that this exclusion from the electoral process is detrimental to their community and ask the President of the Republic to put an end to the state of siege, as recommended during previous discussions on the subject.
The communications director of the CENI clarified that the elections of governors will not be held in certain provinces, but that those of senators will indeed take place in Ituri. It is therefore essential to take into consideration the concerns of social actors in the region and find a solution that meets the expectations of the population.
It is essential to promote constructive dialogue between all parties involved, in order to find consensus and ensure the democratic participation of all citizens. Lifting the state of siege in Ituri could be a first step towards a peaceful and equitable solution for all.
