In a recent interview on the Honest Bunch podcast, Eedris Abdulkareem shared the story that inspired his 2002 hit “Mr. Lecturer.”
While touring university campuses, he ended up at the University of Lagos where he discovered a young woman crying by the side of the road. After approaching her, the young woman told her that her teacher had asked her to meet him in a hotel if she wanted to pass her exams.
Deeply upset by this revelation, Eedris comforted the young woman and decided to put a plan in place to trap the professor. With the help of his team, they managed to capture the professor red-handed in his hotel room, despite his pleas and promises to never harass female students again.
This disturbing experience directly inspired Eedris who went to record in the studio straight away. The result was the famous title “Mr. Lecturer” which quickly conquered the country’s musical airwaves.
During the interview, Eedris Abdulkareem revealed that the young woman in question is now a doctor in the United States and that he destroyed the videotape four years ago.
This poignant story highlights the courage and determination of those who fight against injustice and exploitation. Thanks to his committed music, Eedris Abdulkareem was able to give a voice to those who did not have one, thus denouncing abuses of power and highlighting important social problems. Through his music, he becomes a standard-bearer for justice and equality.
This episode highlights the importance of social awareness and the responsibility of artists to use their platform to raise awareness and inspire change. Ultimately, “Mr. Lecturer” goes far beyond just a song, it has become a symbol of resistance and empowerment in the face of oppression.
