“The crucial question of the presidential elections in Algeria: towards a postponement to 2025?”

While the presidential election in Algeria should take place before December 19 according to the Constitution, uncertainty hovers over the actual date of the vote. The ambiguous declarations and signals given raise fears of a possible postponement of the elections until 2025, plunging the population into increasing perplexity.

Less than ten months before the election, the subject of the presidential elections remains avoided in the Algerian media, thus fueling the mystery surrounding the holding of this major political event. The lack of debate and clarification from the authorities reinforces the feeling of vagueness surrounding this sensitive issue, to the point that some consider it a taboo.

Recent statements by Abdelkader Bengrina, president of the Movement for Reconstruction (MPR), have caused confusion by raising the possibility of a postponement of the elections. This position, tinged with caution, seems to be a trial balloon to assess the reaction of public opinion to such a scenario. Louisa Hannoune, general secretary of the Workers’ Party (PT), highlighted the unstable regional context to justify the conditions not being met for a peaceful organization of the vote.

The candidacy of Abdelmadjid Tebboune, initially expected for a second presidential term, is now uncertain. Dissensions within his entourage cast doubt on his final decision. Faced with this situation, the demand for increased political transparency in the electoral process is becoming increasingly pressing from various political groups.

In this climate of uncertainty and distrust, Algerians remain awaiting clarification and guarantees regarding the effective holding of presidential elections, in order to preserve the political stability of the country.
