“Children who survived armed groups find hope and protection under the flag of the regular armed forces”

Recent actions by MONUSCO at the Mambango military camp, in the Beni territory (North Kivu), resulted in the separation of 10 child volunteers from the FARDC. These young people, from Rwindi, territory of Rutshuru, expressed their desire to serve under the flag, after fleeing forced recruitment by the M23 in the territories of Rutshuru and Masisi.

These young people, aged between 15 and 17, have had traumatic experiences, with some testifying to acts of violence and abuses perpetrated by the armed groups from which they escaped. Some lost comrades in tragic circumstances, reminding us of the harsh reality of the situation in the region.

The harrowing stories of these children highlight the urgent need for the protection of children affected by armed conflict and the restoration of security in their communities of origin. Their courage and desire to join the regular armed forces shows that they aspire to a better future and to contribute to peace and stability in the region.

It is essential that the authorities become more involved in ensuring the safety of children and putting an end to forced recruitment by armed groups. These young people deserve adequate protection, psychosocial support and opportunities to rebuild their lives and fully integrate into society.

In conclusion, the story of these children reminds us of the need to prevent the recruitment of minors by armed groups and to guarantee respect for their fundamental rights. Their courage and resilience deserve to be celebrated and supported so that they can look forward to a more secure and prosperous future.
