“Escalation of the conflict in eastern DRC: Call for rapid action to protect civilians and restore peace”

The conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to raise concerns, with a recent escalation of violence caused by the M23 rebel group. The United States strongly condemned the rebel group, holding it responsible for the chaotic situation in the Goma region of North Kivu.

The clashes have already led to the loss of lives, both military and civilian, and forced more than 135,000 people to leave their homes and take refuge near Goma. This situation is alarming and endangers the lives of millions of people.

Washington also accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23 and calls for the withdrawal of Rwandan armed forces from the DRC. The United States has expressed concern about the presence of surface-to-air missiles in the Rutshuru region, as well as the attack on a MONUSCO surveillance drone by Rwandan forces.

This escalation of violence highlights the need for rapid and effective intervention to protect civilians and ensure stability in the region. It is crucial that the actors involved in the conflict find a peaceful and lasting solution to end the suffering of local populations.

The situation in eastern DRC remains worrying and requires an urgent response from the international community to protect civilians and restore peace in the region.
