The hot news in the field of electrical energy concerns the rehabilitation and modernization work of the Bendera hydroelectric power station, located in the province of Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This work is supervised by the National Electricity Company (SNEL) and aims to increase electricity production capacity in Kalemie and its surroundings.
According to Sagali Kahite, head of the Bendera production and transport division of SNEL, the work is currently underway and the Bendera power station has already started producing electricity. In addition, the Kalemie city network will also be rehabilitated as part of this project. This modernization will not only increase electricity production capacity, but also reduce untimely outages, so criticized by the population.
The Bendera hydroelectric power station, which was commissioned in 1959, has until now operated with two turbo generator units, one of which had broken down. As part of this rehabilitation project, the plant will be equipped with a third turbo generator group, which has already been manufactured in Europe and is currently at the port of Kalemie. Once installed, this new group will allow the plant to meet the electrical energy needs of the town of Kalemie and its surroundings.
To finance the purchase of this number 3 group, SNEL took out a loan of 20 million dollars from the Industry Promotion Fund (FPI). This financing demonstrates SNEL’s commitment to improving electricity supply in the region, and providing the population with a reliable and stable source of energy.
In conclusion, thanks to the rehabilitation and modernization works of the Bendera hydroelectric power station, the town of Kalemie will experience an increase in its electricity production capacity, which will result in reduced outages and improved supply in electrical energy. This project demonstrates SNEL’s commitment to providing the population with quality energy services, essential to the development of the region.
