“Protecting the wetlands of the DRC: an environmental emergency to safeguard biodiversity and water resources”

The banks of rivers and the Congo River, as well as their tributaries, are unfortunately victims of continued dispossession in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In a context marked by the disruption of town planning and housing services, many urban areas of the country have been invaded by uncontrolled construction, including wetlands. At the same time, these waterways are also subject to pollution caused by plastic waste, sewage and other waste from households. The situation is particularly worrying in Kinshasa, where some individuals have even built their houses in the wetlands of the Malebo pool.

Faced with this worrying reality, it is essential to take measures to preserve the wetlands of the DRC. These ecosystems play a vital role in aquatic and terrestrial ecology.

First of all, wetlands are reservoirs of biodiversity. They are home to a wide variety of animal and plant species that depend on these habitats for their survival. These ecosystems therefore constitute refuges for many threatened or endangered species. Additionally, wetlands also provide feeding and breeding grounds for many migratory birds, making them essential stops on their seasonal journeys.

Then, wetlands play a crucial role in regulating climate and water resources. By absorbing excess rainwater, they reduce the risk of flooding. They also act as natural filters, trapping pollutants and purifying flowing water. Wetlands are therefore valuable allies in the management of water resources, contributing to the recharge of groundwater and maintaining a water balance on a local and regional scale.

Finally, wetlands provide many ecosystem services to local populations. They are often used for agriculture, fishing, tourism, or even the supply of construction materials. They thus contribute to the economy and well-being of local communities. Additionally, wetlands also have cultural and aesthetic value, providing beautiful landscapes and serving as places for recreation and relaxation.

It is therefore crucial to raise public awareness and put in place measures to protect and sustainably manage wetlands in the DRC. This requires stricter regulations concerning construction and the occupation of wetlands, as well as the strengthening of town planning and housing services. It is also necessary to promote better waste management, in order to reduce pollution of waterways.. Finally, awareness-raising and environmental education initiatives should be encouraged, to promote collective awareness of the importance of wetlands.

By preserving and promoting the wetlands of the DRC, we contribute to the protection of biodiversity, climate regulation and the conservation of water resources. It is our responsibility to preserve these fragile ecosystems for present and future generations.
