“Violence in Congo: the FARDC denounces the deadly attacks by the M23 and the Rwandan army in Mweso”

The FARDC, armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, recently denounced the acts of violence perpetrated by the M23 rebels and the Rwandan army. According to information reported by Lieutenant-Colonel Guillaume Njike Kaiko, spokesperson for the army in North Kivu, the rebels dropped bombs on the city of Mweso, causing the death of 19 civilians and injuring 27 others.

This attack, described as “terrorist” by the FARDC, was allegedly carried out in reprisal after the rebels were dislodged from the town of Mweso. Residential houses in the city also suffered significant damage from the bomb explosions.

The FARDC deplores this attack, which it considers to be a serious violation of international humanitarian law. They therefore call on the international community to take measures to sanction these acts of violence. The FARDC also reaffirmed its determination to fight the Rwandan army and M23 terrorists on Congolese territory.

This situation has led to high tension in the region, preventing many residents from leaving the city of Mweso as a security measure.

For his part, the president of M23, Bertrand Busimwa, denied any responsibility for the damage caused in Mweso, instead accusing the FARDC.

It is important to emphasize that this attack comes in addition to the numerous clashes and acts of violence which regularly shake the North Kivu region in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The urgency is therefore to find lasting solutions to guarantee the security of civilian populations and put an end to the violence which persists in this part of the country. The international community must also play a key role in supporting efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.

It is essential to highlight these tragic events and inform the public about the difficult situation that the inhabitants of the North Kivu region are going through. It is also essential to call for international action to end these acts of violence and instability in this part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
