Regular and independent inspections of prison facilities must be carried out to ensure that the rights of prisoners are respected and that those responsible for violations are held accountable.
Finally, a comprehensive reform of the prison system in the DRC is necessary. This involves setting up social reintegration and rehabilitation programs for prisoners, in order to promote their reintegration into society once their sentence has been served. Efforts must also be made to relieve overcrowding in prisons and find alternatives to detention, in particular by promoting the use of non-custodial sentences.
