“US carries out airstrikes in Somalia against Al-Shabab: fight against terrorism intensifies”

In recent news, the United States confirmed it carried out airstrikes in Somalia, targeting three militants affiliated with Al-Shabab, a group linked to Al-Qaeda. According to the United States Africa Command, the strikes were carried out at the request of the Somali government, in a remote area approximately 35 kilometers northeast of the port city of Kismayo.

Although the identities of the targeted individuals have not been revealed, no civilian casualties have been reported following these strikes. Al-Shabab represents a constant threat to American forces and Washington’s security interests. This militant group has been waging a 16-year insurgency against Somalia’s Western-backed government, with the support of African Union peacekeeping troops.

Al-Shabab has also carried out significant extremist attacks in neighboring Kenya, including against African Union peacekeeping forces including Kenyan soldiers. In 2020, the group stormed a major US counterterrorism military base on the Kenyan coast, causing loss of life and destruction. As part of a phased withdrawal, the African Union multinational peacekeeping force is currently withdrawing from Somalia, with the aim of transferring security responsibilities to Somali forces.

However, concerns persist about the preparedness of Somali forces to face this challenge. Last month, the Somali government welcomed the decision of the United Nations Security Council to lift the arms embargo imposed on the country more than three decades ago, hoping it will contribute to the modernization of forces Somalis. This lifting of the embargo should allow Somalia to strengthen its defense and fight against terrorism capabilities.

It is essential to continue to monitor the situation in Somalia, because the fight against Al-Shabab and the stabilization of the country are major challenges for regional and international security. International cooperation and continued support for Somali forces will be essential to confront this persistent threat and help consolidate peace in Somalia.
