“Conflicts of power and rivalries at the top of Congolese power: the former right-hand man of President Tshisekedi, Fortunat Biselele, released on bail”

Fortunat Biselele, former right-hand man of President Tshisekedi, was released on bail after several months of detention. He is being prosecuted for “treason, undermining state security and spreading false rumors”. His arrest in January 2023 and his detention in Kinshasa’s central prison were marked by a compromising publication of private videos with several women on social networks. The security services are suspected of being behind this broadcast.

These events are taking place in a context of palace warfare within President Tshisekedi’s inner circle. Between advisers, ministers and securocrats, the struggle for power and influence rages in the City of the AU.

Many strongmen who initially stood with President Tshisekedi have been sidelined and face the same charges. It seems to be a clash of clans and egos, where personal interests take precedence over social progress.

Fortunat Biselele, like François Beya, was provisionally released while the investigation of his case is underway at the high court. Biselele has also expressed his distrust of this jurisdiction and asked that his case be transferred to another forum.

This situation reflects the tensions and rivalries within the Congolese power, where personal issues are intertwined with the interests of the country. Political stability and social progress are compromised by these internal conflicts.

It remains to be seen how this affair will evolve and what consequences it will have on the political balance in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The power in place must demonstrate transparency and accountability to restore the confidence of the population and truly work for the development of the country
