Women in power in the Congolese National Police: significant progress welcomed by CAFED

Women in power: significant progress in the Congolese National Police

In a laudable step aimed at recognizing the efforts and professionalism of the Congolese police, the Collective of Women’s Organizations for Development in North Kivu (CAFED) awarded diplomas of merit to around thirty elements of the Police Congolese National Authority, as well as their leaders. This initiative salutes the work accomplished by the police during the securing of the December 2023 elections.

Isabelle Pendeza, president of CAFED, explains that this graduation aims to encourage the police to continue their efforts in all areas of securing the population. She stresses that it is important to recognize the work done by law enforcement and not only point out the problems, but also applaud the improvements that have been made.

CAFED supports provincial authorities in various areas, including security, and recognizes the importance of the police in maintaining order and protecting the population. Isabelle Pendeza says that thanks to God and the police, the elections were able to take place peacefully, despite a few isolated incidents.

This CAFED initiative highlights the essential role of women in the Congolese police. Indeed, more and more women are occupying positions of responsibility within this institution. This development reflects greater openness and recognition of the importance of diversity and inclusion in law enforcement.

However, there are still challenges to be met in terms of gender equality within the Congolese police. The representation of women remains low and additional measures must be taken to encourage their accession to positions of responsibility and promote their active participation within the institution.

The awarding of these diplomas of merit is therefore both an encouragement and a reminder of the issues linked to the promotion of women in the Congolese police. It highlights the progress made, but also underlines the need to go further in the quest for equality and diversity within this essential institution for the security and protection of the Congolese population.
