News in Kananga: Deadly tension following the arrest of an alleged child kidnapper

The evening of Thursday, July 20, 2023 in Kananga, capital of Kasai-Central province, was the scene of intense tension between the population and the police. It all started when the population apprehended a woman suspected of kidnapping children in the commune of Katoka. Driven by a sense of justice, the crowd wanted to take matters into their own hands.

However, the situation quickly escalated, prompting local authorities to intervene. Elements of the Congolese National Police (PNC) went to the scene to try to control the situation and arrest the presumed culprit. Unfortunately, the anger of the population was such that the police had to use live ammunition to disperse the curious.

Unfortunately, these incidents resulted in the deaths of two people. A young boy of around 18 died on the spot, while a man in his fifties passed away around an hour after the events. Faced with this tragedy, the governor of the province, John Kabeya Shikayi, reportedly demanded the arrest of the police officer responsible for these two deaths.

Meanwhile, the alleged child kidnapper is being held at the PNC’s urban police station, pending the investigation of her case. This case arouses strong reactions within the population, which wonders how such incidents can occur and calls for justice for the victims.
