“Virunga National Park: controversy surrounding the authorization of human activities in a protected area”

The Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) recently made a controversial decision regarding Virunga National Park. By authorizing the inhabitants of the “Congo ya Sika” district to carry out their human activities in this protected space, the ICCN aroused mixed reactions.

This interim compromise was reached after five days of discussions between various stakeholders, including the local community, authorities and a delegation from the North Kivu provincial government. It is important to emphasize that this authorization is only temporary, pending a final decision from the central government regarding whether or not to move the “Congo ya Sika” neighborhood.

This decision was criticized by some civil society organizations, such as the New Civil Society of the Ruwenzori Sector, which is calling for a change in the law integrating this area into the Virunga National Park.

On the one hand, some argue that allowing residents to continue their activities in the park can be economically beneficial for the local community. This could strengthen their food security and improve their livelihoods. However, this also poses wildlife conservation issues and could compromise the overall integrity of the park.

It is essential to find a balance between the needs of local communities and the preservation of the environment. Measures must be put in place to ensure sustainable use of natural resources and protect the unique biodiversity of Virunga National Park.

And you, what is your position on this subject? Do you think it is possible to reconcile the interests of residents and the protection of our natural heritage? Don’t hesitate to share your point of view in the comments.
