“The amnesty of ex-ADF rebels in Uganda: a new chance for reintegration and peace”

The former ADF rebels, amnestied by the Ugandan government, are opening a new page in their lives. After following psychological treatment, detraumatization and deradicalization sessions, they were reintegrated into society thanks to the American NGO Bridgeway. These veterans are now able to practice different professions such as sewing, baking or even making liquid soap.

This amnesty follows the joint operation between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, called Shujja, which made it possible to rescue unaccompanied minors and disarm ADF fighters. Among the 75 amnestied, there are Congolese, Ugandans, Burundians and a Tanzanian.

It is important to emphasize that this is not the first time that the Ugandan government has granted an amnesty to former ADF rebels. Last September, 22 fighters had already benefited from this rehabilitation process.

Bridgeway, which played a crucial role in this reintegration, also plans the repatriation of former Congolese rebels still present in Uganda in the coming days.

This deradicalization and social reintegration initiative for former ADF rebels shows the Ugandan government’s desire to promote peace and stability in the region. By offering a new chance to these veterans, it allows them to rebuild their lives, while contributing to the reconstruction and development of society.
