The decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) to cancel the legislative and provincial elections and certain votes due to fraud and illegal possession of electronic voting devices has sparked positive reactions from civil society. The organization La Voix des sans voix (VSV) expressed itself welcoming this decision, seeing it as a strong signal for the consolidation of democracy in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In a statement, Rostin Manketa, Executive Director of the VSV, stressed the importance of legal representation of the population by transparently elected candidates. He also welcomed the fact that the CENI indiscriminately sanctioned all candidates, including those from the ruling parties, thus demonstrating its desire to fight fraud and guarantee the integrity of the electoral process.
However, Rostin Manketa also demanded the resignation of all sanctioned candidates from their functions, in order to allow the Congolese justice system to do its work impartially. This measure, according to him, would help strengthen people’s confidence in the democratic system and promote transparency.
Furthermore, it should be noted that candidates whose votes have been canceled by the CENI have the possibility of filing a free appeal with the latter or of seizing the administrative judge, the Council of State, to contest the decision. This approach demonstrates the importance given to justice and the protection of the rights of candidates.
This decision by the CENI, although it may give rise to tensions and protests, is an important step towards the consolidation of democracy in the DRC. It shows the determination of the authorities to fight electoral fraud and guarantee the integrity of the electoral process.
It is essential to emphasize that democracy is based on free, fair and transparent elections, where the will of the people is respected. By taking firm measures to combat electoral fraud, the CENI contributes to strengthening citizens’ confidence in the democratic system and promoting the stability and development of the country.
The DRC is going through a crucial period in its history, with major challenges to face on the political, economic and social levels. It is therefore essential that the electoral process takes place in a fair and transparent manner, in order to elect legitimate representatives who can work for the interest of the Congolese people.
In conclusion, the decision of the CENI to cancel the legislative and provincial elections and certain votes due to fraud is a strong signal in favor of the consolidation of democracy in the DRC. This measure, welcomed by civil society, demonstrates the authorities’ desire to fight against electoral fraud and guarantee the integrity of the electoral process.. It is necessary that all actors involved in this process work together to ensure transparent and legitimate elections, in order to build a better future for the DRC.
