Title: Meeting between Ugandan and Congolese presidents to fight against armed groups in the DRC
Introduction :
A historic meeting was held in Kampala between Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and the emissaries of Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi. The objective of this meeting was to discuss strategies to fight against the terrorists of the March 23 movement (M23) raging in the east of the DRC, more specifically in the province of North Kivu. This meeting follows the joint operations carried out by the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and the Ugandan army (UPDF) to neutralize armed groups in the region.
A strong message for peace and security:
President Félix Tshisekedi has sent two emissaries, Regional Integration Minister Antipas Mbusa and High Representative Tony Kanku, to convey a clear message to the Ugandan President. Although the precise content of this message has not been revealed, it is expected that the Congolese President will address strategic issues for the implementation of the recommendations of the 7th Grand Mixed Uganda-DRC Commission. This is an important step aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fight against cross-border armed groups.
Uganda’s support in the search for peace:
President Museveni praised the diplomatic policy of his Congolese counterpart, stressing his commitment to consult and involve neighboring African countries in the search for lasting peace in eastern DRC. This regional approach is essential to deal with security challenges and to eradicate the armed groups that have plagued the region for too long.
The results of the joint operation:
Since November 30, 2021, the Congolese and Ugandan armed forces have been carrying out joint operations against armed groups, in particular the ADF, in the territories of Beni and Irumu. These operations made it possible to neutralize a large number of terrorists and regain control of several strongholds in the peripheral region of Beni. This testifies to the effectiveness of the cooperation between the two countries in the fight against armed groups and in the restoration of security in eastern DRC.
Conclusion :
The meeting between the Ugandan and Congolese presidents marks an important step in the fight against armed groups in the DRC. The mutual commitment to strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation testifies to the will of the two countries to guarantee security and stability in the eastern Congo region. It is an opportunity to put an end to the suffering of the local populations and to create an environment conducive to the economic and social development of the region. This meeting is one more step towards building a better future for the DRC and its citizens
