Death of Mbongeni Ngema, creator of “Sarafina!”, in a tragic car accident

In a sad car accident while returning from a funeral in a rural town in the Eastern Cape province, renowned South African playwright, producer and composer Mbongeni Ngema died at the age of 68, according to a statement from his family.

Ngema was best known for writing “Sarafina!”, a play that became a hit on Broadway in 1988. Adapted into a musical comedy-drama starring Whoopi Goldberg in 1992, it became an international hit, nominated for Tony and Grammy Awards .

“Sarafina!” tells the story of a student who inspires her classmates to fight against racial segregation in South Africa during apartheid, after her favorite teacher, played by Goldberg, is imprisoned for protesting the system.

This story is based on the events of the Soweto uprising in 1976, when thousands of students demonstrated against the apartheid government.

Ngema also created “Woza Albert”, an acclaimed theater production which has won over 20 awards worldwide. This political satire explores the return of Jesus Christ as a black man to South Africa during apartheid.

Tributes to Ngema have poured in, including from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“The many productions he created or contributed to inspired resilience and pride among us South Africans and brought South Africa and our continent to theaters, homes and consciousness. millions of people across the world,” Ramaphosa said in a statement.

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress, as well as one of its biggest rivals, the left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters, also offered condolences.
