Agriculture is an essential sector for the economic and social development of low-income countries. However, many farmers, especially smallholders, face numerous challenges such as climate change, conflict and poverty. This is where the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized United Nations agency that aims to improve the living conditions of these farmers and promote food security, comes in.
recently, IFAD launched its new fundraising campaign, with the aim of raising an additional two billion dollars to reach a total envelope of ten billion for its three-year action program. This campaign was launched during the fourth session of replenishment of IFAD’s financial resources, co-organized by Angola and France in Paris.
Angola is a concrete example of the successes achieved through collaboration with IFAD. In this country, nine projects financed by IFAD have benefited nearly 600,000 families. Among these projects, the AFAP project made it possible to develop the capacities of fish farmers by building fish production ponds intended for sale on local markets and for local consumption. This not only created sources of income for the communities but also met the food needs of the population.
However, IFAD faces increasing competition from other institutions that also organize fundraising. Despite this, 48 States have pledged to contribute a total amount of just over $1 billion, demonstrating their confidence in IFAD and its results.
To adapt to the new global economic context, IFAD has adopted more innovative financing strategies. It has connected to global financial markets, allowing it to raise more funds. Additionally, IFAD has also begun to cooperate with the private sector, using its balance sheet to co-invest in agricultural projects. This approach, more focused on public-private partnership, makes it possible to make the best use of available resources and maximize the impact of projects financed by IFAD.
In conclusion, IFAD plays a crucial role in improving the living conditions of small farmers and promoting food security in low-income countries. Its new fundraising campaign aims to mobilize additional resources to support these farmers and address the challenges they face. Through innovative financing strategies and public-private partnerships, IFAD is positioning itself as a driving force for agricultural transformation and poverty reduction around the world.
