“General strike at Engen DRC: workers mobilize for their rights”

News of December 26, 2023: Engen DRC workers plan a general strike

Engen DRC workers have been facing a difficult situation for several months, depriving them of their salaries. The cause is the war between the South African shareholders and the Congolese party. Faced with this unacceptable situation, workers have decided to launch a general strike starting Tuesday, December 26, 2023.

The crisis within the company Engen RDC finds its origin in the decision of the Board of Directors dated October 24, 2023. In fact, during this meeting, it was decided to terminate the contract of the General Director, without providing replacement measurement. This had major repercussions on the company’s cash flow, particularly with regard to employee remuneration, payment of state taxes and suppliers.

The situation was further complicated with co-management which was subsequently decided, but which is not recognized in the ENGEN statute. This led to difficulties in signing bank checks, thus aggravating the uncertainty and precariousness of workers.

This crisis is also fueled by conflicts between South African shareholders and the Congolese party, with the desire of the Congolese state and those close to President Félix Tshisekedi to take control of the Engen subsidiary. The general director of Engen RDC was dismissed, leading to paralysis of the company.

This precarious situation is now pushing workers to mobilize and demand their rights. The general strike planned for December 26, 2023 is a call for solidarity and resistance to the injustices suffered.

It is essential to emphasize the importance of union commitment in the defense of workers’ rights and the need for a rapid resolution of this conflict to guarantee the stability and well-being of Engen RDC employees.
