Last weekend, a new tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea made headlines. At least 61 migrants are missing and presumed dead after their boat sank off the coast of Libya. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), high waves engulfed their boat shortly after it left Zouara, on Libya’s northwest coast. The survivors, numbering 25, were rescued and transferred to a Libyan detention center. They are all in good health and have received medical support from IOM staff.
Libya and Tunisia are main departure points for migrants who risk dangerous sea crossings in the hope of reaching Europe, via Italy. This year, more than 153,000 migrants have arrived in Italy from Tunisia and Libya, according to the United Nations refugee agency. Faced with this situation, the far-right government of Giorgia Meloni in Italy has taken several measures to restrict the activities of humanitarian ships which rescue people attempting the perilous crossing from North Africa.
Unfortunately, this tragedy is not an isolated case. The Central Mediterranean route is considered the deadliest in the world, claiming hundreds of lives each year. According to Flavio Di Giacomo, IOM spokesperson, more than 2,250 people have lost their lives this year on this road. He stresses that these dramatic figures show that too little is being done to save lives at sea.
The situation in Libya is a key factor in this migration crisis. The violence that has persisted for more than a decade since the fall and death of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in a NATO-backed revolt has transformed the country into fertile ground for human traffickers, accused of practices ranging from extortion into slavery.
Faced with this situation, it is essential that the countries concerned join forces to fight against smugglers and find lasting solutions to this crisis. Governments must work closely with international organizations and NGOs to strengthen sea rescue operations, end human trafficking and provide legal and safe pathways for immigration.
It is also important to raise public awareness of this humanitarian crisis and promote global solidarity to protect the rights of migrants. Every life lost in the Mediterranean Sea is a tragedy that reminds us of the urgency to act and protect the most vulnerable.
