“Investigation into anti-Semitism: The prestigious universities Harvard, Penn and MIT under fire”

The US Congress recently announced the opening of an investigation into the management of three prestigious universities – Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – following a parliamentary hearing devoted to anti-Semitism on their campus. This decision follows strong reactions to the war between Israel and Hamas, which shook these academic establishments.

The hearing, which took place on Capitol Hill, sparked widespread criticism of university presidents. Some donors have asked institutions to explicitly condemn pro-Palestinian student protests. During the hearing, a Republican elected official even compared calls for “intifada” to incitement to “genocide against Jews in Israel and around the world.”

Faced with these accusations, Claudine Gay, president of Harvard University, defended freedom of expression on campus, but her argument was not convincing. Elise Stefanik, another elected Republican, requested his resignation, and this request was relayed by several influential figures in the American political class.

Following the hearing, the committee responsible for education issues in the House of Representatives deemed the responses of university presidents “unacceptable” in the face of what they described as “endemic anti-Semitism” on campuses. Thus, an investigation was opened to identify the “individual and institutional failings” of these prestigious academic institutions.

University presidents have since published press releases or videos to clarify their positions. They reaffirmed that calls for violence or genocide against the Jewish community, or any other ethnic or religious group, were absolutely condemnable and had no place in their establishments.

This investigation raises important questions about freedom of expression and the management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on American college campuses. It also highlights the responsibility of universities in creating a safe and inclusive educational environment for all students.

It will be interesting to follow the developments of this investigation and to see how the universities concerned will react to resolve these problems and restore the confidence of their student community. In any case, this case highlights the importance of open and respectful dialogue within university campuses, in order to promote mutual understanding and a constructive exchange of ideas.
