The conflict between the Congolese army and Bakata Katanga militiamen in the Greater Katanga region continues to raise serious concerns. General Eddy Kapend, Commander of the 22nd Military Region, recently called on these militiamen to lay down their arms to avoid inevitable reprisals by the security forces.

General Kapend expressed frustration at the abuses committed by these militiamen, highlighting in particular the brutal murder of two army officers. These acts of violence, such as rape, looting and murder, perpetrated by the Bakata Katanga, have spread terror among the local populations and seriously compromise the stability of the region.

Faced with this worrying situation, General Kapend indicated that operational measures have already been taken to neutralize these militiamen and restore security in the region. He also called on the population to support the efforts of the army by denouncing any illegal activity and by actively collaborating to eradicate this threat.

The symposium organized by the University of Lubumbashi in collaboration with the Provincial Assembly of Haut-Katanga is of paramount importance as it aims to identify sustainable solutions to the social problems affecting the province. Experts from various fields are participating in this event, addressing key themes such as the economy, agro-pastoralism, entrepreneurship, defense and security.

It is imperative that concrete actions be taken to end the violence perpetrated by the Bakata Katanga militia and ensure the security of local populations. Collaboration between the army, local authorities and civil society is essential to end this cycle of violence and restore peace in the Greater Katanga region.
